Washington Wizards head coach Flip Saunders is really getting frustrated. In a very recent morning team practice, the former Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons top guru hollered at his players, “If you want to get better. Come back at 4,” and stormed out of the floor followed by his deputies. The Wizards have won just one game in their opening five outings thus far in the new season despite parading top rookie John Wall, new recruit Kirk Hinrich and the comebacking Gilbert Arenas. Saunders says there is no sense of urgency in the team, according to The Washington Post. He now orders twice-a-day practice sessions for the team.
“We didn't accomplish what we needed to get accomplished. After you lose a couple of games, you hope to come with a sense of urgency. I was excited about coming here.
“We didn't come with that same urgency as a team. We're not going to beg guys to play hard. If they want to play hard, we'll come back and go another time, we get people who do play hard. That's one thing as coaches, you can't coach effort. We'll find guys that are going to give it.
“It's frustration when you lost games that are winnable. You would think that you'd come into a practice with a sense of urgency. Come in to learn, to be very detail oriented, get in, get out, get what you need to get done and get better. I didn't think we had the right frame of mind. Kirk [Hinrich], Al [Thornton] and Cartier [Martin] gave the right effort, but as a whole, there were a couple of guys that were in between but then there are some guys that didn't do what we needed to do, so we'll come back at four.”
