With the 2010-11 NBA regular season almost a history, we now give way to our choices for those who shone brightest including the top news makers in the first ever Boyet’s Hoops-Watch annual awards. We are handing out winners in six categories: Most Valuable Player (MVP), Coach of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Most Celebrated Player of the Year and the Most Hated Player of the Year. So without further ado, herewith are the recipients with corresponding brief justifications of their season-long achievement:
MVP: Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls – He is the runaway winner. He is the heart and soul of an overachieving team which had recorded its first 60-win season since the G.O.A.T. era of the 90’s.
COACH OF THE YEAR: Tim Thibodeau, Chicago Bulls – Another runaway winner. The biggest coaching story of the year. From out of nowhere to leading the Bulls for a possible tie of the league’s best win-loss record in his first year as a head coach. Enough said.
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Blake Griffin, Los Angeles Clippers – The Clippers did not have a great season but why did NBA fans worldwide continues to follow them game after game? It’s all because of the “Griffin Phenomena.” Never had the league have an impact rookie since LeBron James in 2003-04. This Oklahoma City native had a dream season as a newbie by winning the slam dunk title, saw action for the Western Conference squad in the annual All-Star game, dominated the ESPN highlight reels, grace the covers of leading sports magazines and much, much more.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Dwight Howard, Orlando Magic – The Disneyworld outfit do not rely mainly on his powerful offensive game but more on his rebounding prowess and intimidating defensive presence in the paint. His consistency night after night on both ends of the court is greatly appreciated not only by the Magic fans but followers of other teams too. His shot-blocking ability remains the number one fear of the 29 other NBA teams.
MOST CELEBRATED PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Carmelo Anthony, New York Knicks – He was the hottest topic in the league from tip-off time in October to the all-star game festivities in February. All because of the guessing game on where he would land after seeking a trade from his old club, the Denver Nuggets, early in the season. Now he has found a new home with the Knicks.
MOST HATED PLAYER OF THE YEAR: LeBron James, Miami Heat – A hands-down winner. From the time he left the Cleveland Cavaliers for South Beach to join Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in a much-ballyhooed “D-Day TV Special” last summer, he had gained more enemies than friends. The boos can be heard not only in the Cavs home arena but in other cities as well during the Heat road games and James is the prime target.
