A starting role with the San Antonio
Spurs await DeJuan Blair this season. |
This ought to be one of the most inspiring stories in the NBA in recent years. After being bypassed in the first round of the 2009 draft, DeJuan Blair was picked 37th over-all in the second round by the San Antonio Spurs. Teams were afraid to take a gamble on the 6-7, former University of Pittsburgh standout due to his questionable durability and health issues. But the Spurs see something special in Blair that the other 29 teams did not. Blair went on to post respectable numbers during his rookie campaign, when he averaged 7.8 ppg and 6.4 rpg while seeing action in all 82 games in the regular season. With a greatly improved performance in the ongoing pre-season games, Blair is now set to start for the Spurs in the upcoming season. Blair says he owe everything to Spurs coach Gregg Popovich and he will take advantage of the opportunity given to him, according to San Antonio Express.
“Starting in the NBA is a big thing for anybody who's in the NBA. Getting minutes is another big thing, and being smart. He's giving me the opportunity, and I'm going to take full advantage of it and try to be the best I can be.”
