DO-OR-DIE OPENER

This is ridiculous. Where in this world can you find a basketball tournament where the opening games are a do-or-die scenario? Well, only in the Guangzhou Asian Games. Four win-or-go home games will kick-off the quadrennial competitions and Smart Gilas Team Pilipinas will play one of those crazy games. Coach Rajko Toroman’s boys will play Saudi Arabia and the winner advances to the second round. In an article by Quinito Henson of PhilStar, Toroman says he totally disagree with the knockout format and suggested a qualification play that will decide the best 12 teams in the Asian region. Aside from naturalized citizen Marcus Douthit, three PBA stars namely Asi Taulava, Kelly Williams and Sol Mercado will reinforce Smart Gilas in the Guangzhou tilt.

“I don’t agree with it. There must be a qualification (tournament) before the Asian Games so that the best 12 teams will be in Guangzhou, not one game to decide.”
