Kerem Tunceri scores the winning
lay-up for Team Turkey in their final
four game against Serbia. |
The 2010 FIBA World Championships has never run out of dramatic
plays. Contrasting wins in the semifinals by Turkey
and Team USA
has brought both teams in a “Dream Finale”. The USA
rolled to an easy 89-74 victory over upstart Lithuania,
while host Turkey needed an
amazing lay-up by Kerem Tunceri with 0.4 ticks to go to edge Serbia, 83-82.
It will be fitting climax for the two-week quadrennial joust as the
championship game will see the last two teams standing, which are the only
remaining undefeated squads in the 24-team event. It will be a “USA against the
World” scenario in the finals as the Americans are expected to play before a hostile crowd, who are
looking forward for a major upset and a first-ever World title for Turkey. Local
NBA and International basketball expert and Celtics Philippines original Bert Ramirez
sent an interesting text message to this writer on his thoughts on the
results of the final four games and the coming finals.
“It’s Turkey-USA for the
championship of the World Basketball Championships! The US beat Lithuania, 89-74 as Kevin Durant
fired a US World Championship record 38 points. Host Turkey
nosed out Serbia,
83-82, in the other semifinal match-up as our guy Semih Erden played a crucial
role in the exciting victory. Erden just had 9 points but made the slam that
regained the lead for Turkey with 16 seconds left, the provided a screen for K.
Tunceri’s winning lay-up with half a second to go and finally got a block of an
alley-hoop attempt by Serbia as time expired. Erden wil now have a chance to
match-up with real NBA talent when his team plays the US in the
finals.”
