PAYBACK TIME

The controversial USA-USSR gold
medal game in the 1972 Munich
Olympics.
Team USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski is fuming mad at the remarks of Russia coach David Blatt that there was no cheating done during the 1972 Munich Olympics gold medal match between the Americans and the Soviets. The USA squad lost the game, 51-50, but not after three replays of the last 3 seconds which culminated to a buzzer-beating lay-up of the late Alexander Belov. The Americans has remained bitter to this day and the silver medal remains unclaimed. Krzyzewski said Blatt can say whatever he wants and that controversial game will have no bearing once Team USA takes the floor in their FIBA World Championships quarterfinal game against the Russians, according to NBA.com. The American mentor has not mention it but he is probably thinking of payback time once the game unfolds between the former rival countries.

“He's a Russian, he coaches the Russian team, so he probably has that viewpoint. And his eyes are clear now because there's no tears in them. When you think of international basketball, you think of USA and Russia games, that being one of them. Whatever he thinks, he thinks. It really has absolutely no bearing on what we're trying to do tomorrow. Absolutely none.”
