Word is out that
veteran point guard Jason Kidd of the Dallas Mavericks is in Las Vegas right
now and ready to help out Team USA head coach Mike Krzyzewski in the Nationals
training camp which reels off today. Kidd, who was a member of the US gold-medal
winning team in the Beijing Olympics, was requested to join the camp to impart
his international experience to a young training pool which did not include any
stars from the Beijing
squad. However, according to an article in ESPN Dallas/ Fort Worth, the 37-year-old Bay Area native will
only attend the Las Vegas camp and will not join
the team in the FIBA World basketball championships in Turkey next
month.
“It's a bit too
soon to start calling him the next Coach K, but that's the world Mavericks
guard Jason Kidd is going to sample this week.
“Kidd will be in Las Vegas starting Monday as a special guest of the Team
USA coaching staff as preparations begin for the World Championships in Turkey later
this summer.
“The move hasn't been officially announced yet, but Kidd's presence was
requested by Team USA coach Mike Krzyzewski, who wants the 37-year-old to serve
as a mentor and sounding board for a young squad that will return precisely
zero of the 12 players who won gold in Beijing at the 2008 Olympics.”
